In a suburban house with no running water, a lonely mermaid's surroundings collide with her subconscious when water begins to leak from the ceiling.

“In this poignant and hypnotically vivid fantastical drama, Australian Directors’ Guild award-winner Chloe de Brito depicts the isolation, disconnection and dysphoria that sometimes come with the search for belonging.” - 70th Melbourne International Film Festival

. . .

Trapped in a suburban dysphoria without running water, mermaid Jules (Bernie Van Tiel) is overwhelmed by loneliness. In an effort to make contact with something living, Jules asks "is anyone there?" into her shellphone but receives no clear response. When water begins to leak from the ceiling, Jules' subconscious and surroundings collide in an explosive confrontation with her own identity.

Pairing lush visuals with an aquatic soundscape of modular synthesiser compositions from Benjamin Carrey and music from Bri Clark, Pink Reef invites the viewer into a hypnotic, metaphysical immersion. Throughout her film, writer/director/producer Chloe de Brito weaves together the seemingly mundane moments between catastrophe and closure, drawing out of the lonely and into the transcendent.
